Collection: Handwoven Maheshwari Silk Sarees

The town of Maheshwar has been a centre of handloom weaving since the 5th century. Maheshwar is the home of one of India's finest handloom fabric traditions. It is noted as a centre for weaving colourful Maheshwari sarees and textiles. It rose to popularity under the rule of strong maratha leader Queen Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar. Ahilya Bai wanted royal gifts for the royal guest. Hence weavers from Mandu and Surat were hired and Maheswari saree and turban were woven. It is said that Ahilya Bai herself designed first 9 yard sarees. These sarees were worn by female members of the royal court and were also gifted to royal guests. You can easily see that the inspiration for the borders and motifs in these textiles comes from the local architecture and the Narmada river.
